The Salon Guy Speaks (continued)
Interview with salon guru Stephen Marinaro

FY: When it comes to gray hair, it's a clear giveaway on age. On some it looks great, on others it seems to accelerate the person's aging appearance. What's your take on silver strands?

This is a great topic and I see this situation with men and women in the Salon. Either way, people hate seeing their gray hair. I have people freak out just by seeing 2-3 strands! It is going to happen at some point. The best way to deal with it is to start early if you have a budget for color or if it bothers you that much.

If appearance is everything, then go in for the monthly touch up. Match your natural color to keep it looking natural and well hidden. No one will know. As you get older, however, they will start to come in more and more. You will see the amount of gray hair increase, but you'll be happy you're coloring it in the first place. I think it can be elegant on the right person and if you wear it well. It requires an overall complete beauty and style to pull it off. If you don't dress the part it will age you even more.

FY: People do all kinds of things to conceal their age when it comes to hairstyles and cover-ups. What are the faux pas you see in your business as it relates to trying to hide one's age?

A lot of women use make up to cover their gray hair or color brushes that stain the hair to blend the gray. This sometimes can create a build up on the hair, which can affect your normal color service in the Salon. Many women also think going lighter as you get older makes you look younger. I disagree strongly. It only works if you have the skin tone and choose the right blonde shade. Going lighter can wash out your skin, pale you and make you look like you are even more gray. My best advice is to deepen it or choose the tones that will enhance your skin, eyes and overall look. THAT is what keeps you looking young.

FY: How do you feel about getting older? And what's something you embrace about the age you are now?

Honestly, age is just a number to me. I haven't broken 40 yet, however being in my mid 30's I simply don't even think of age as an issue. I work out 4-5 days a week, eat as healthy as I can, and work very hard. What does affect me is working so hard that I FEEL twice my age. Being stressed and overworked can age you quickly and that is my biggest challenge. I actually am horrible when it comes to skin care, and my grooming. I do it because I have to, but having a bald head and a beard, and keeping in shape is more maintenance then most people think! I embrace the fact that I am getting older and there is nothing I can do. I like the fact that I have a young face and don't look my age. Most people think I am in my late 20's. We all can complain but I just take things day by day.

FY: Anything else you'd like to add?

I have been in the salon industry going on 20 years. I have seen it all from bad surgery, to bad color jobs, to bad haircuts. It's important to have the desire to look and feel younger. Don't let anyone stop you from feeling good (your husband, wife, etc.) They will actually like you BETTER when you feel good. My goal is to make everyone feel and look their best and that is why I love what I do.
